The basis of the diet of a wavy parrot
In order for corrugated parrots to be in great shape, we need to provide them with a varied diet similar to the one they enjoy in their homeland. In their natural habitat, they are found in Australia, where they penetrate the grass steppes in large numbers in search of mature and semi-mature grass seeds. Thus, the main food of wavy parrots will always be grains of various kinds – for example, flax, millet or oats.
Food for wavy parrots, that is, typical grain-eaters, is made from a mixture in which as much as 30-40% is canary grass. Another 2-3% is shelled oats, hemp, flax and grass seeds. Meanwhile, the rest is mainly millet – including trichina ber, or Senegalese millet.
What is worth paying attention to when feeding seed to parakeets? In order for their diet to be properly balanced, they need to eat a variety of seeds, not just one type. However, it may happen that our pet throws away some seeds that it is not fond of – then it is worth thinking about changing the mixture fed.
What can corrugated parrots eat – take care to diversify the diet
Grains are the basis of nutrition for our pets, but the diet of parrots should also be varied with soft and juicy foods – for example, vegetables and fruits. It is good for a small portion of greens to be included in the daily menu of the pet. What can corrugated parrots eat?
- various kinds of greens – parrots are even fond of green vegetables and leaves. This is because such food is found in their natural environment. This can be chicory, Brussels sprouts, ordinary or Chinese cabbage, broccoli and radishes. During the season, it is worth giving the birds leaves of milkweed, broad or narrow-leaved plantain, twigs of willow, birch and shoots of currants and gooseberries.
- a very valuable vegetable that flying pets are fond of is carrots. Served in a piece, it can even be a form of toy for wavy parrots.
- fruits – especially recommended is sweet apple, bananas or halved grapes.
- sprouts – especially sprouts from oats and millet are a valuable food in the diet of wavy parrots. You can germinate them at home, which takes about 3 days, and provide your parakeet with a small portion of fresh sprouts every day.

Foods that we give periodically
From time to time it is worth giving your flying pet other products – such as hard-boiled egg, lean white cottage cheese, parsley and celery, and cooked rice without salt. The vitamins and animal protein contained in these products are essential for the bird’s proper development. Such healthy supplements wave parrots can eat once every 6-7 days.
What else should every wavy parakeet have in its cage?
- Drinking water should obligatorily be in the cage of every parakeet. It should be boiled and cooled water or spring water. Parrots are not given mineral water. From time to time you can give a weak infusion of fruit tea or chamomile – mixed half and half with water. Water should be changed daily.
- It is recommended to give parakeets lime, which is available in pet stores. Its purpose is to supplement the diet of wavy parakeets with calcium. Moreover, thanks to the fact that it is given in the form of a cube, the pet can rub its beak on it keeping it in good condition. An alternative is sepia – or more precisely, the bone of this marine creature. In sepia you will find not only calcium, but also other valuable minerals, such as iodine.
- Although opinions are divided, some experienced breeders point out the role of sand in the diet of parrots. In the wild, wavy parrots have constant access to it, swallowing its grains along with cereal grains. Sand helps the pets in digestion, and in addition, most parrots are very fond of it.
What should corrugated parrots not be fed?
Analyzing the topic of feeding wavy parrots, it is also worth considering what nutritional mistakes are worth avoiding. Certainly, a wavy parrot should not eat most human foods, such as fried meat, fatty cheeses, salted foods, creams, sugar and chocolate. Alcohol and all carbonated beverages are also prohibited.
Wavy parrots are very sensitive to all kinds of pesticides and pollutants. Even their small substances can be very harmful to the bird. Therefore, before giving your parakeet green feed or twigs, you should first wash them. It is advisable to choose vegetables from organic cultivation, free from harmful substances. For this reason, you can not give your pet mixed grains, which are sold in garden stores – very often they are treated with chemical agents that are downright poisonous to parrots.
It is also worth watching out for the quality of the grains themselves. If you notice that they are moldy or musty, they should not be given to parrots. The toxins produced in them could damage the nervous system or cause other serious disorders.
